How We Lost the Emu War
Take a jaunt back to the early 1930s when Australia's military, fresh off World War I, squared off against the mighty flightless bird, the emu. Equipped with machine guns and a sprinkle of overconfidence, the soldiers found themselves outwitted by the clever, speedy emus.
From strategic emu maneuvers to comedic failures in pest control, pull up a seat as we explore a chapter in history that has to be heard to be believed. They're still winning, by the way.

The Elan School: Abuse of the 'Troubled Teen'
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.7 месяцев назад
In the 70s, one of the most controversial troubled teen schools was founded by ex-heroin addict, Joe Ricci. A forced fighting ring for misbehaving children, extended stays in isolation rooms, human faeces being poured over children as punishments. Despite evidence of flagrant child abuse and the denial of basic human rights, the school’s abusive practises flew under the radar and it only became...

Elan 8 98-2000 was 12 years old when I was sent to elan. I want to thank you for your thoughtful video. Don’t worry about the people who say there are inaccuracies, those are little things. What matters is you took the time, effort to do a video and try to get our story out to your viewers because you care. For that I could hug you ❤ for the people who complain feel free to make your own RUclips videos telling your story, we need more of that but you don’t need to criticize someone who hasn’t experienced it but is trying to understand and cares enough to also try to reach other people. I think it’s just hard, when you have survived something like this you long so bad for people to understand you, understand your experience. We moved on from there and have friends, family, partners and children all with this part of us that is unknowable or unfathomable, to even the people closest to us we could explain or talk about it all we want but they’d never really get it. Yet we could be separated by distance and years that have past from people we were there with and then connect with them so deep because of our shared experience, we can be understood in a way others never truly can understand. There is a loneliness in that at times even if we aren’t consciously thinking about elan, it’s still there. So I think when videos come out we are excited that it’s out there, for the validation, validation from the world that it wasn’t ok, that yes it was abuse and traumatic, that we aren’t just being over dramatic as some of us have been told by people who can’t face the guilt of what they did to us. There’s excitement to share this thing that you struggle to explain but never can to those in our lives. At the same time it’s disappointing, because even videos, documentaries or books can really even begin to touch the experience of it, to have lived it for two years. Even if you could record a persons exact memories and recreate and record a 2 year long movie that captures every moment, it can’t ever come close to touching the experience, not really and there is a sadness and loneliness in that. It’s kind of like if I read a book and then told you about it, it wouldn’t be the same as you reading it. Or if I described what hot was, I could describe it in every imaginable way and you would never come close to understanding what hot meant until you put your hand on something hot and felt it. So I think with anything like this, just understand why you made the video and be happy in that. Take any criticism with an understanding that there are so many mixed emotions for people when watching/hearing about anything to do with elan.

Jamie here. Hey girl. Found it funny you chose that name to “drop a slip on.” Sooooo….. as a former Elan resident, I found your video mostly on point, very entertaining (you’re pretty funny) but man, there were quite a few inaccuracies. It was Fornits, not Reddit that we were all on. It’s not “Elan 6 or whatever.” Lol we had very specific houses. Also, the claim that it was a school for the wealthy is a stretch. Just because Joe charged $43k/year in the 90s and Sharon $53k in the 2000s doesn’t mean families could afford it. You said it yourself that a lot of kids were sent there by the state. I, personally appreciate you making this video since Elan seems to be the forgotten “school” despite our efforts to bring awareness. Even the trouble teen industry’s breaking code silence has made us outsiders by not listing our closing date accurately, even though we delivered The Last Stop doc in 2017, prior to This is Paris and any subsequent projects. •You forgot to mention the position of Chief Expeditor. No biggie. •Elan began as a facility for adults with substance abuse issues. •Lol you got your feelings off for me (Jaimee) for your lipgloss😂 Um… we didn’t get makeup. •Oy vey. There was no isolation room. Males and females were NEVER allowed to be one on one alone. •I’m not advocating the ring, but I will clarify that they did “try” to match offenders with high strength opponents of approx same weight Overall, you did a fantastic job of breaking down the “dichotomy,” the term used for the jobs although coordinators didn’t handle finances. COD (coordinator on duty) ran the house, coordinator on book ran the incident book and dealing crews etc. Oh, and we didn’t have kids in the woods for security (except at Joe’s direction when he was paranoid about government vehicles arriving). We had a tracker (adult) who hung out in a shack in a duck hunting suit who was trained to detect the scent of people. Nice guy 😂 but you really didn’t want him snagging you if you ran. Trust me. Cheers🥂I liked your video a lot!

Elan 8 98/2000. I agree I like that she is trying to bring awareness anyone who does will always have my appreciation. It just doesn’t ever capture not that anything ever could. I just find that it never seems even the slightest bit bad in comparison to the actual experience. If I was watching as someone without the experience I would think that it sucks and that it did more harm but I would never even begin to imagine the severity of the trauma. Also the ring only paired general weight between people for liability reasons, that’s why they would pick 2-3 people to rotate. Unfortunately The last stop is as not a well done documentary, it didn’t explain it well, it contained many old video clips taken from an old documentary done on it. They didn’t have enough true stories from a variety of survivors and the ones they did weren’t good examples or had a good understanding of the effects that elan had on them or all the subtle ways the elan experience embedded itself in seemingly invisible ways, it’s embedded into our psyche, character, behaviour, thinking, communication, the way we relate to people, even the way we view the world. Even those of us who have went on to be successful, seemingly well rounded people, who don’t do drugs or drink, have families of our own, good relationships etc… I think the last stop was just the beginning, it was a wake up call as well to those of us who were there. I was one of those who didn’t think elan did any damage to me, I would say yeah the place sucked and wasn’t fun but it made me a stronger person, I would say the ones who fell apart were blaming elan for there problems etc… and I really believed that and I feel sorry that I felt that way. I think I just didn’t want to look at it, couldn’t handle looking at it, and I resented the people who could let themselves cry about it, to feel experience, reach out and connect to other about it. But at the time it made me so angry to see people who followed the program perfectly, never having a general meeting, pushing the program on me, who were acting like the program made them so much better, so insightful and on and on, that would talk about the trauma of Marc Rosenberg dragging people off to the corner and holding GM’s yet they were the same people who brought the info to him that put you in the corner, I was 1 of 3 in elan 8 that fought the program tooth and nail and us 3 were the “hard” cases and his pet projects, and man did it make me angry to here people talk about my experiences as their trauma. Especially when using it as an excuse for why they do this or that. I really blocked elan and I succeeded in life by turning it all off, pushing through problems, being super strict and hard on myself and never letting myself give up or give in to anything less then what I wanted. I had a great life but you can only shut off and push things away for so long, I went through a stressful period in life nothing crazy but out of nowhere I started to snap, nightmares that I’d wake up and can’t remember, crazy emotions coming up, irritable and snapping at people, had no idea where it was coming from and I just tried to push it down and push through it, to keep life together and that led to horrible anxiety and panic attacks because I really didn’t know what to do I was always so good at keeping it together and dealing with things myself, j in didn’t know how to reach out to anyone or even what to say if I had tried as there weren’t really words for it, that led me to having enough and deciding to check out, I took my car on the highway and found an 18 wheeler switched into the oncoming lane. How I survived I’ll never know my car was like a crushed soda can, other than shoulder surgery to repair my arm, i walked away pretty untouched considering. I was shocked at what I had done, being on the other side living through the attempt with more clarity I had no answers for the psychiatrist, my life was good I had no real reason to want to unalive myself, not to me and not to them. They found youth health files and pieced together my history with elan and I did t think it was that, they had alot to explain to me and connections to help me make between elan and a lot of things, it’s crazy how much they k ew and understood about elan considering they had no direct experience with these types of schools and were educated and practiced in a country that doesn’t have these schools because the practices are not legal (Canada) yet all these social workers, judges, therapists in the states claim to have no knowledge or understanding….. sorry to have went off on such a tangent, I meant to comment but it all just rushed out lol. But my point is even with elan “The last stop” is only the beginning there is still so much more to come out, it’s starting with look this is what happened to us, and I believe it will as we move past just bringing it to light and admitting what happened breaking the silence. When we start talking and sharing our experiences. Start understanding how deeply this has truly effected, many still have no idea how elan wasn’t just experienced it was woven throughout our whole entire being in ways they we may not ever fully identify all the little intricacies it has shaped even in our personalities. It happened at such a formative age in terms of brain development, in terms of identity and personality development, in terms social development and relationships. We went through these developmental periods not only with some trauma which even small traumatic events during this period can have far reaching effects. But we lived this trauma 24/7 for 2+ years every second, every interaction, every thought and feeling for that period was centered on elan conditioning or brainwashing. I could go on sorry again. There has never been an experiment or study that would ever encompass this experience . But there is more to come about elan and many other places, I think in time there will be movies or documentaries or books that gets deeper into the stories and effects. Even the new series on Netflix “The program” while not about elan was definitely done better then the last stop. But really all of these are just brief intros to these programs to get it out there and say me too, there are more schools, more of us.

Elan 8 98/2000 “The last stop” was a very mediocre movie, a lot of elan survivors choose not to get involved with it and the guy who did it didn’t do a good job with it. It doesn’t even do the experience the slightest bit of justice, and it’s my understanding the people he had involved he ended up using or screwing over. So yes watch the movie it’s the only thing out there we have on elan at all but keep in mind it was very poorly done and want all accurate either.

@40:55.. you're doing good so far explaining everything. About the "Feelings Box," at the end of the day, the coordinator on Duty go through all the notes dropped In The box from that day, records it, and then hands it into staff. Once the staff see who was dropping feelings on who, they would put us in the same group. I also would like to mention that we had to bring chairs with us. There weren't enough chairs in the house for us to go to group without bringing our own with us. It's another reason why they made so much money. They didn't pay for anything! Many times we were short on utensils and forks but of course everything was a learning experience so that was them to teach us how to value things. And we also weren't not allowed to use regular cleaning products, and obviously there are no janitors because we were in charge of all the cleaning. Especially if you are a non strength, the only job you have is to clean. And that's the only way to move up in a program. the place was filthy and it smelled so gross in the house. The same sponges that we had to scrub toilets with we were scrubbing the floors with. And many of the times they were moldy sponges. Sometimes worms would come out of them. It was disgusting. But they had so much money they were able to pay off the health inspectors so they were never held accountable. When I was looking through my files 6 years later, i did see a letter written to my mom saying that there was asbestos that was detected but "everything was taken care." I remember how much I couldn't wait to go outside and breathe fresh air but every time I would have to come back into the house I would gag because it smelled so bad. Sorry, didn't mean to go off on a tangent. Back to the box, in case if you didn't have any issues with anyone and if you didn't drop a feeling in the box that day you could lose your job, and also be accused of "aquairing guilt." That could result in losing your job and scrubbing floors all day or a general meeting. Say that you don't have any guilt to cop to, and if they think you do, they'll put you in the corner until you "cop to all your guilt." The whole backbone of how the structure was built and how it ran was based on each of us calling out each other and snitching on each other. They called it holding each other accountable but it was really part of the mind control and abuse for us to never unite against the staff/directors. Discussing any staff member with each other was forbidden. We weren't allowed to talk about "anybody's attitudes" who were above us. The staff and director is were treated as gods/celebrities. If anyone spoke to or of a staff member in any type of critical or negative way, they would have their high strength like bodyguards take care of it for them.

I never thought anybody would ever believe me or begin to try to understand what it was like to be there. Even though it closed down in 2011, there's so many other schools that are still open and running right now, making billions off torturing, abusing and breaking hearts and spirits of children and so-called "troubled teens". For those of us who were not amateur psycho and sociopaths, and juvenile delinquent criminals, we were teens who came from troubled families. The fact they called the troubled teen industry is ridiculous. These programs are run and funded by elite predators. And my mom was more than happy and relieved to sign me away, and putting my life into the hands of strangers. My mom willingly paid traffickers wake me up in the middle of the night, kidnapping me to take me away. I have all the paperwork of the correspondence and everything with the escort service. If anything happened to me, she signed a legal contract stating that she agrees that they will not be held responsible if anything happened to me, being in the care of the traffickers who kidnapped me. And I found that out years after I graduated after I got a hold my files when I was home from college. Not knowing that my mom signed a legal document stating that these people can do whatever they want to me and she can't legally hold them responsible still blows my mind today. I was completely unaware of that. that's another layer on top of what was absolutely traumatic within itself--just the whole ritual of how they kidnap us in the middle of the night. They made sure that nobody was in the house when they came to get me at 3:00 in the morning, so I feared that they murdered my family and they were going to kill or kidnap me or something terrible. What else would you think being woken up by strangers holding shackles and handcuffs when you're 16 years old at 3:00 in the morning and nobody is in the house but me and these two strangers standing over my bed threatening to take me? That experience alone is horrific and terrifying especially being 16 years. And then after that once you get there, the horror has just begun. I felt really bad for the Elan residents who were 12 and 13 years old. Some of them were there for over 3 years. The younger they are, the longer they can keep them there. At the time I was there it was $50,000 a year, but nothing was included. Not even a soda or a snack pack.
